Event, Dedication, Astor Monument (Alpine) & Snake River Canyon Road Opening, 1939

[Taken from the Minutes of Wyoming Historical Landmark Commission Annual Meeting, 19 Jul 1939 in Cheyenne, Wyoming].br/br/quot;On Tuesday morning, July 4, the dedicatory party, which had been joined the night before by Mart Christensen, state treasurer, and wife, left for the dedication of the Astor Monument (shown middle right), about thirty-five miles down the highway into the lower valley (Alpine). The Chairman of this program was also Senator Barrus, and promptly at 10:30 a.m, it started with an invocation by Bishop Dana of Thayne, Wyoming, after which the dedicatory address was given by Bishop Fluckiger of Aetna (Etna). Mr. Peterson, chairman of the Utah State Highway Commission, representing Govenor Blood, of Utah, gave a short address, and was followed by Senator William Taylor, of Montpelier, Idaho, representing the Govenor of Idaho. Govenor Smith then replied thanking both of the representatives of our neighboring states. The Afton High School Band played two or three selections, and the dedicatory party and the crowd proceeded on to the official opening of the Snake River Canyon road, about twenty miles in the canyon in a beautiful, large park. The celebration started with races of all kinds and two soft ball games by selected teams; also many other sports. About twenty-one or twenty-two hundred cars entered the canyon after the opening, and it was estimated that there were between six or seven thousand people at the celebration.
